Proving her innocence is the ultimate test

While on patrol, rookie cop Grace Colton pursues a fleeing suspect, never thinking it could end her career—or her life.

Suddenly, she’s everyone’s enemy.

Enter Camden Kingsley from Internal Affairs, who rubs Grace the wrong way and seems determined to believe the worst about her.

But during interrogations, their sizzling chemistry is obvious, turning foe into an unexpected defender, especially as one person desperately wants Grace out of the picture—permanently.

My Rating:  4.5 stars

A Colton Internal Affair is the ninth title in the Coltons of Grave Gulch multi-author mini-series, and, my goodness is this series ever heating up and closing in on storylines.  But we still have a few books to enjoy before we know all the answers.

We’ve known Grace throughout the series, she’s either a sibling of or a cousin to many people we are now familiar with in Grave Gulch.  She’s also a rookie cop, and while her family, her town is embroiled in the ongoing investigations concerning not only a serial killer but a member of the department who caused such pain and trouble by altering police evidence resulting in false imprisonments and the guilty walking free, Grace has been learning, always gathering information that will aid her in her career choice.  And on this night a police officer’s worst nightmare will unfold and even more fuel added to the evergrowing anger from some in the community toward the Grave Gulch police force and the Coltons in particular.

This far into a romantic suspense series I feel I need to be careful to not give away spoilers.  So, while A Colton Internal Affair does move the series arc along, adds a bit more intrigue and information to the overall series, this one is mostly about Grace and Camden’s situation and proving that Grace was justified in discharging her weapon even though the gun she knows she saw in the assailant’s hand cannot be found… yet.

Camden is what I would call one of the good guys with the right intentions within the Internal Affairs department of any police force.  He’s after the truth, only the truth of what actually happened in the case he’s investigating.  Unfortunately, some IA people have a very bad reputation but I never felt that tendency to believe the worst first and ask questions later coming from Camden, he is determined to understand what happened in Grace’s case even if that means he’s not doing what the Mayor or the DA wants him to do.  He has a history that plays strongly into the way he treats each case and I was impressed by this man’s integrity – and it doesn’t hurt that he’s basically a nice guy who is fighting a very strong attraction to the woman he’s supposed to be investigating.

I adored Grace.  She’s strong even when feeling weak.  Her family is her support system and even when everything seems against her she won’t back down, even to the extent of taking some chances that could have gone so very wrong.  Together with Camden, they will find answers – and face some very dangerous situations before the truth unfolds and clears Grace.  This is a couple that fits together so well, and their romance, while complete within this story, feels as though it has some more growing to go.  And I hope we’ll get to see that reflected in the remaining stories in the Coltons of Grave Gulch series.  The overall series arc does move along a bit with some interesting revelations along the way (that’s the spoiler part that I’m not going to talk about now).  I enjoyed myself back in this world and now comes the month-long wait to discover what comes next in Uncovering Colton’s Family Secret by Linda O. Johnston.

I own a Kindle edition of this title.

**And this brings the “Can You Read A Series In A Month? Challenge” to an end for me.  I didn’t complete a series because there are still three titles left not published yet… but I did get current and read nine out of twelve stories in the series and actually finished this Challenge so I’m taking that as a win. 🙂
