Title: A Deputy in Amish Country
Series: Amish Country Haven #1
Author: Patricia Johns
Genre: Contemporary Romance (Amish)
Published: February 22, 2022
Publisher: Harlequin Heartwarming (Harlequin Western)
My Rating: 4.5 stars
A Deputy in Amish Country is full of everything that I want in what I’d consider a romantic suspense story. A woman who has witnessed something horrific and needs to go into hiding in plain sight, a dedicated lawman who not only protects his witness but begins to fall for her in spite of their official relationship of witness/protector, and some vile bad guys out to do no good on a couple of fronts. It’s action-packed, with hints of steam possibilities one day, two unlikely people falling in love, an adorable little Amish girl (neighbor) full of mischief and life, and a dangerous situation made even more so when all the facts are not known to the police.
It would be so easy to sit here and tell you this entire story which I’m not going to do (I hope) because this is one story that builds as more information is added, as emotions build as well, and especially as decisions must be ultimately made… decision that would cross lines with consequences. If those hints aren’t enough to have you reaching for A Deputy in Amish Country right now, then I don’t know what would.
I loved Conrad, he’s a strong, somewhat stubborn deputy who believes in what he does. He also has a soft heart for mischievous little girls and a woman who is slowly stealing his heart against his better judgment. He would always defend his witness to the death, but he’ll defend the woman he’s falling in love with beyond that. Annabelle is in trouble deep, some of it her own making as she is holding back details about the murder during a bank robbery that put her into witness protection in the first place. She’s a good woman who, frankly, is running scared because if she tells the entire story to Conrad and his bosses, well, it’s not going to look that great for her. She never expected to fall in love with the man protecting her, and in the end, she’ll end up doing what she can to protect him as well. And little Jane, how that sweet, mischief-filled little girl won my heart so easily. Add in some fun secondary characters that I hope to meet up with again soon, another closer-to-home bit of trouble for Conrad’s Amish community and I was hooked from beginning to end.
A Deputy in Amish Country is fast-paced, action-filled, with hints of passion, a growing love, and trouble to solve. I had such a good time here, and I’m definitely diving into the next story, A Cowboy in Amish Country as soon as I can. If you love a good, solid romance with touches of mischief, finding love unexpectedly, and danger then this one is perfect for you.
