A Fortune’s Windfall begins the newest continuity series The Fortunes of Texas: Hitting the Jackpot with a story of one couple’s changing circumstances of moving from everyday people into a world of wealth beyond their imagination.  Along the way, we’ll meet the Mahoney-Fortune family, siblings who saw the pain and devastation firsthand when their father simply walked away from their family leaving behind a wife, brothers, and a sister to fend for themselves as best they could.  They also got an early look at how love can hurt beyond belief and that knowledge somewhat shaped their futures as well.

Their mom held them together, yet Linc grew up very quickly the day his father left and he took on an adult role at a far too young age.  Now, this family is being granted something they never, ever could have expected — an inheritance from their wealthy grandfather to be handed out to each sibling over time.  Lives are about to be changed… but the fear of being left behind once again is never far from their minds.

I’ve read most of “The Fortunes” continuity series over the years but A Fortune’s Windfall quickly drew me in so that I felt connected with this family from the start.  Linc is your average guy, a hard worker, the older brother who watches out for his siblings even now that they are all adults.  A man who does the right thing, a man who doesn’t believe in forever as far as relationships go so he’s never really pursued his attraction to Remi, even though they’ve worked together at the same store for some time.  He sees Remi as his friend.  Sure, he might think of her far too often or make reasons to be around her but still, she’s a coworker and a friend… until she’s not.  When life changes for Linc and he begins to think outside of this careful box that was his life he’ll begin to see things differently… but still be rather clueless about handling those changing emotions.

Can you imagine suddenly being handed a million dollars?  Dreamed of it, sure, but to become a reality – I’ve no idea how I’d react.  So, the way that Linc reacted to his sudden wealth felt completely natural to me.  He kinda went overboard, but he has a friend to rein him in to remind him of the important things in life… which does not include online shopping all night long.  I loved watching Linc and Remi falling for each other.  Yes, it’s a rocky road to a happy ending for them, but it was also a realistic journey as well.  Remi is perfect for Linc.  I adored her from the start.  She’s often more levelheaded yet quicker to acknowledge what she’s feeling for this complicated man.  Watching Linc battle his feelings for Remi was at times painful, but he had to go through that pain to understand what he risked losing.

A Fortune’s Windfall is emotionally satisfying, a well-written, engaging romance with a believable couple at the center of it all.  I loved Linc and Remi, their romance may have had a few stumbles but in the end… love wins.  I had fun with this opening story and I’ll definitely be following these newest Fortunes as they find love… and spend that inheritance.

I own a Kindle edition of this title.
