Tale of an Unsatisfying Series

Posted February 1, 2022 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

I recently binge-read a series that I’ve had parts of on my Kindle for over a year… the final two books came (or one more will come) out in 2022.  To say I was disappointed would be an understatement for I could find not one single thing about the hero or heroine in any of the three books I read to like or to root for their happy ending.

So, why did I continue reading not only one but two additional books?  Because I was waiting for the spark, for that moment that most readers know when it all falls together and you love who these fictional people are… and I never found that moment through three books.  Which breaks my heart.

I’ve made the choice to not review any of them here or on other locations.  I won’t give a negative review to just increase my reading challenges numbers or to put down an author who I’ll read again — but not until their next series launches.  These stories simply didn’t work for me.  I should have DNF’d them once I realized they just weren’t working for me, but I gave them every chance to win me over… and that didn’t happen.  The absolute truth is that just because this series didn’t work for me doesn’t mean that another reader won’t think them the best work of this author ever.  It’s a quote that “No two persons ever read the same story.”  And that is so true.

2022 is the year that I’ve declared that I will be using the power of DNF far more often.  And trying so hard with this particular series just proves how badly I need to use that DNF power of any reader… to not finish a book that isn’t working for me for whatever reason.

Sadly, I know there will be many DNFs to come, for I know my history of giving every book every chance that I can before walking away.  Years pass too quickly, and there are too many unread books to deny myself finishing the good ones just to give the bad ones a “chance”.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? #2

Posted January 10, 2022 by Marsha in Discussion, It's Monday! What Are You Reading? / 4 Comments

I love fun memes, I really need to join in on more of them because… fun.  We should all have more fun in our lives, especially those of us who usually have a book in hand and a ton in line waiting to be read! 🙂

So let’s kick this off with “It’s Monday! What are you reading?”.  From the official page, “It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile!” Now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

I gave myself permission to take a bit of a book break over the holidays.  Didn’t read as much, and surprisingly, a lot of what I did read I also gave myself permission to DNF simply because I didn’t care one whit what happened to those characters.  That’s a 2022 goal of mine – to stop reading a book I’m not enjoying simply because I “spent good money” on it.  So. What. ?  I’m really getting behind the realization that we have a limited amount of time on this blue marble in space… why continue to read a book that I’m hating just because I spent “good money on it”?  No, no more.

One book I did devour was The Girl in the Mist by Kristen Ashley.  This was her first novel in the Thriller genre and did she ever nail it!  I’ll admit to having read all of her books and loved (to some degree) every single one… but this one went to another level of suspense, mystery, terror, and romance with an older couple who proved that age is no limit for love or sexiness!  I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves a good mystery, a seasoned romance, and isn’t put off by uncomfortable subjects (or at least knows how to skim past parts of a story to enjoy the other parts).

2022 New Release Challenge at (un)Conventional Bookworms

Posted December 31, 2021 by Marsha in 2022 New Release Challenge, Discussion / 0 Comments

I’m so glad that Linda and Brandee of (un)Conventional Bookworms fame are doing the 2022 New Release Challenge again.  With the way 2021 turned out I’ve been on pins and needles waiting to see if my favorite Challenges return for the new year — most have and some fun new ones cropped up so that’s a win for us readers!

I’m going for the New Release Veteran level once again at 61-100 books read/reviewed again this year.  I officially made it to 65 books in 2021, but through my own mistake didn’t make that 100 since I forgot to link an entire quarter *hangs head blushing*!  I’ve always said that remembering to go link up on any Challenge has always been my downfall… but I’m getting better so here’s hoping that 2022 is the year that I remember throughout the year.

The 2022 New Release Challenge is simply a fun way to keep track of the new (2022) releases that we’ve read.  You can easily join up as well just by clicking on the word link above or using the graphic over on the side. <—-  It’s fun, and frankly, I always find interesting new releases that I didn’t know about by clicking on other participants’ links as well!  By the end of the day, I will have made a GoodReads shelf for the Challenge as well as the list I do on my Reading Challenges page to keep track so I can go link up everything at one time, here at Happily Ever After Romance.

Good luck & have fun!

Christmas Week Countdown!

Posted December 18, 2021 by Marsha in Christmas Romance, Discussion / 0 Comments

I don’t know how this Christmas Season has gotten away from me, but here we are one week away from Christmas — and here I am with so many Christmas titles still unread due to lack of time, I’m always running out of time never books though.

I’ll do my best to get as many titles reviewed (I’ve binge read even when not posting) this last week until Christmas 2021, but the truth is that I’ll probably be listing Christmas romances up to Valentine’s Day.  *sigh*  Yeah.  I have a lot of books, Christmas romance books.

Fingers crossed that I find better time/life management in 2022… yeah, I don’t think so either but I’m going to try!

Merry Christmas Romance Reading!

Remembering Miranda Lee

Posted December 5, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

The Romance world lost a giant in November with the passing of Miranda Lee.

I’ve spent countless hours over the years lost in her emotional, loving stories.  She will be greatly missed.

Here is a link to the official announcement through Mills and Boon, (aka Harlequin) a publishing house she’d spent her writing career with.  Remembering Miranda Lee.

May she rest with the angels.

An Overload of Books!

Posted December 4, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

I love to get lost in a good book, you as well if you’re reading this.  🙂  Yet the reality is that I bought far too many books in 2021 that have no chance of being read before the ending of this year.  And that not only upsets me but gets me a wee bit mad at myself as well.  I read for pleasure, I review here on Happily Ever After Romance because I love sharing those books and thoughts with other readers – and if another review helps an author, well, I’m all for that.  Still.  Purchased books do help authors and publishing houses, but unread books don’t do a damned thing for anyone, right?

So, I honestly have to come up with another way of getting the books I’ve purchased read in a more timely fashion.  Personally, I don’t care what year a really good book was published, but authors and publishing houses do. *shrugs*  Add to the overload problem is my addiction to series or duets.  *sigh*  Yeah, that adds to the books that need to be read closer to the publication date.  So what’s a book-loving female to do?

I could buy fewer books.  Okay, okay you can stop laughing now.  I know that’s not going to happen.  I could limit the series that I get started on to a more “reasonable” number each year — but where’s the reading fun in that?!

I think I might stop the “big book hauls” in 2022.  It’s knowing that these unread titles are on the Kindle that is driving me batty over all of this.  If I know what’s available or releasing each month (still have my TBR pages only as a list of what to buy not book hauls) then I could simply buy the next book as I finish reading the one before.  But, again… where is the fun in that?  Grabbing those monthly book hauls is a big part of why I even have this blog – to share that anticipation and the fun of having multiple books just waiting for me, ya know?

Can’t Wait Wednesday #1

Posted November 24, 2021 by Marsha in Can't Wait Wednesday, Discussion, Weekly Events / 2 Comments

As a life-long avid reader, there is not much that can get my anticipation rising quicker than knowing a favorite author has a new book releasing soon.  Admittedly, here at Happily Ever After Romance, I focus on Romance, in particular Harlequin (or Harlequin-styled) Romance stories.  So when I went searching for weekly events or memes within the Romance Reading Community I knew that I’d be adding Can’t Wait Wednesday to that list. 🙂  Here’s the basic information about this fun weekly meme celebrating those anticipated releases we all look forward to:

“Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Just click on the “Read More” button below to see what book I’m looking forward to release day for this week!  Oh, and happy reading to you no matter what genre you love we all love getting lost in a good book. 🙂

Next Older Series Catch-Up

Posted April 27, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

If you’re anything like me then your TBR pile is unbelievably large and completely unintentional.  I have complete series (that were released over years) on my Kindle, purchased already, that I simply have not gotten around to reading.  Now, that’s fine for the author and the publishing house, they got their money from me 🙂 … but I haven’t gotten the pleasure of that money spent yet.  Just sayin’ – it’s time for those books to get themselves read so I can be up-to-date when the newest release shows up and begs to come live on my Kindle.

I’m caught up on Anna J. Stewart’s Butterfly Harbor series (Oh, how I loved that one – the reviews are on the blog).  I have the title released this year to get the review up for and then wait for the next release.  So, one series down from that TBR tower.

Now, I’m going to start on Christine Rimmer’s The Bravos of Valentine Bay series.  This one also has endured for years now, and every book that is out in the series (including the newest) is on my Kindle… binge-read ahead!  (this is also going to count for my 2021 Beat the Backlist Reading Challenge so Yay! for that) —BtB can be found here—  🙂

Just a reminder — don’t forget those books on your e-readers or your bookshelves.  They might not be the newest release, but they are a brand new reading experience for you.  So, don’t forget your books, they get lonely.  *sad book’s face*

Butterfly Harbor

Posted February 6, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

There are times when I simply don’t want to leave an author’s world, that’s usually when I’ll binge-read a series.  And that’s exactly what I’ve done with Anna J. Stewart’s “Butterfly Harbor” series.

The stories in the “Butterfly Harbor” series flow into each other just as naturally as the ocean waves hit the beach.  Without intending to I’ve spent most of this week lost in a small California coastal town with real people with real troubles who find honest, trustworthy solutions… and perhaps fall in love along the way.

Two things are a constant here the ocean’s beauty and the splendor and magic of the Monarch butterflies who fill the eucalyptus groves with their beauty.  Each plays a part in every story, necessary secondary characters to this world.

Over the next week or so I’ll be posting my reviews of the titles in the “Butterfly Harbor” series.  Frankly, I didn’t want to stop reading long enough to write up the review of each book as I finished it – now that’s not wanting to leave a world for long! ** Well, as often happens in life… life got in the way of doing the fun stuff, like getting those reviews up which will be taking place this week.  *shrugs* Life Happened in February**

If you haven’t discovered this series I would highly recommend it.  Yes, there are those guaranteed happily ever after endings, but each person is unique, has a solid story and an issue to be dealt with.  You’ll become entwined with the people of this small California town and come to need to know more.  I hope you’ll give the series a try and get lost in this amazing world.

A Breath of Relief ~ A Sense of Hope and Determination

Posted January 23, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

In some ways, 2021 started out worse than 2020, if that’s even possible given what we’ve experienced last year.

For me, January 6, 2021, brought all of my fears to the surface and I, quite frankly, fell apart that day.  Despair, anger, frustration, and such a sense of bewilderment at how we as a country had come to a day like that.

Then came January 20, 2021.  A day that I cried tears of relief, tears of joy, and even laughter from the deepest part of my heart and soul.  Oh, I know the exit of one despicable President isn’t the ending of all of my country’s problems.  But with this new President, a President that I believe in, that I trust has the nation’s and its people’s best interests at heart gives me hope for a future that has been sadly lacking in recent years.  An awesome female Vice-President is simply icing on top of a very unique cake.

Add to that sense of wonder and hope is the fact that I and my son qualify for the COVID vaccine and are setting up those appointments as quickly as possible — and my sense of renewal, sense of purpose, and a need to get back to the things I love (the things that I’ve somewhat neglected recently) has overtaken my imagination.  I feel alive again – and that, my friend, is an amazing feeling to rediscover.

Joining the 2021 New Release Challenge at (Un)Conventional Bookworms

Posted January 2, 2021 by Marsha in Discussion / 2 Comments

I’ve joined the 2021 New Release Challenge over at (Un)Conventional Bookworms – and you can go check it out through this link or clicking on the graphic.

I love Reading Challenges, they help keep me focused on those goals I made back at the beginning of each new year.  I also know that not remembering to go back and link up reviews is a major downfall for me.  So, this year I’m making Goodreads Shelves to keep me updated and easier to link up at each Challenge’s host website.

In the past, I’d joined Linda and Brandee’s New Release Challenge with an older established blog of mine (Keeper Bookshelf) for many years and I’ve enjoyed the challenge of it (but again, that linking up does me in every year).  With Happily Ever After Romance, I wanted a place where I could focus on only Romance in all its various genres and tropes.  Now, I know, without a doubt that I’ll be purchasing new releases each and every month from Harlequin.  More some months than other, but I hit Amazon like clockwork on the 1st of every month to get my Romance fix in once again.

Since my 2021 Goodreads Challenge is 100 books, I’m going for the same 100 books here.  Sounds rather daunting doesn’t it?  But I’m addicted to romance novels in any shape or form so I believe I can hit that number by December 31, 2021.  Guess time will tell. 🙂

It’s January 2, 2021 – I’ve made my monthly purchases (new releases) – so now it’s time to get reading.  If you’ve joined as well, I wish you good luck and enjoy yourself because this all is supposed to be fun – we’ve got enough stress out there in the world as it is. 🙂

Let’s Talk Bookish: The Pros and Cons of Book Blogging

Posted September 26, 2020 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

I discovered this weekly meme through Sophie at Balivernes who visited my blog recently.  (Yes, I do wander around your sites when you visit mine)  I would encourage you to visit Rukky at Eternity Books and Dani at Literary Lion (our hosts for Let’s Talk Bookish) and learn more about them and this weekly event.  The sign-up page on Rukky’s site is HERE.  On Dani’s site, it’s HERE

Although this particular blog is relatively new (I do have 4 active blogs), I’ve been blogging for about 7 years now.  My main blog, Keeper Bookshelf, is 7 years old and my genre-specific, totally paranormal romance shifters site, Shifter Haven is about 6 years old.  I’ve recently added two newer blogs, this one, Happily Ever After Romance, and Paranormal-y Romantic (which will feature all different sub-genre Paranormal Romance novels).

So, I’m not new to this, still discovering and learning new things every month it seems.  And, oh yeah, there are definitely pros and cons to book blogging.

Let’s move on to the lists.

In Case You’re Wondering

Posted September 8, 2020 by Marsha in Discussion / 0 Comments

Happily Ever After Romance is a newish blog, started in May of 2020.  It is a sister site to my Keeper Bookshelf site that has been around for many years now.  While KB focuses on current releases (bought & NetGalley ARCs) HEAR will focus on those long series that I’ve meant to get to but haven’t yet – the no-cost series starter/ first book in a series offers from Amazon – and those brand new series that I want to focus on here.

There are reasons behind the perceived madness – but we’ll leave that for now.

So, please, don’t think that HEAR is grabbing stuff from KB without permission – both blogs belong to me, and are, in a way, companion sites.  (example: you’ll see Marsha’s Keeper Bookshelf on the Goodreads grids of books read because one account at GR, but many, many shelves)

To be frank, I didn’t have to explain myself… but someone emailed me stating that another blog was stealing my content.  *eye roll* there is nothing here from KB except that name on the Goodreads book grid that I can’t get rid of!  It was perhaps kind of this person but annoying as hell to try or have to explain the sister site concept to them.

In any event, that’s the explanation.  Now.  Go take a look around Happily Ever After Romance and let me know your opinion in the comments.  It’s a growing romance review blog and will be around for years to come. 🙂
