Danger in the Depths is the tense, gripping, page-flipping beginning of the New York Harbor Patrol series.  And does it ever deliver the romantic suspense and the type of story that will entice me to pick up the next story in the series without question.

Both Marlowe and Wyatt have things that happened to and because of their parents in the past, and both also strive to leave those things in the past.  Unfortunately, leaving the past behind isn’t always easy to do, especially when those events begin to collide with the present.  Especially when their paths cross when an unusual homicide occurs in the waters around New York City, one that eventually will tie into events of long ago… and that one homicide is only the beginning.

At the core, Dange in the Depths is a very good police drama with enough hints, well hidden at times, that might give you answers before the ending… but maybe not all.  It’s also a compelling story of how our past creates who we are today, how or if we trust again, how time changes some memories, but perhaps most importantly, how we react when those long-ago events are brought back into the limelight.  I understood Marlowe’s hesitation at a vital part of this story – and I also got Wyatt’s reaction to it.  Their romance may have started slowly, but it didn’t take that long before they began to see beneath the surface they showed to the world.  And when it seems trust is broken, to react badly.

There are some parallels in their lives as well as some vast differences, which makes them a fascinating couple for me.  I liked them both, even though they were both extremely stubborn in their own ways.  With any story involving a mystery, I’m going to be vague (or vaguer than usual), in the details.  But this one grabbed my attention and didn’t let go until the final page.  If you enjoy a well-written, fast-paced romantic suspense with mystery, secrets, exasperating family members, and a couple that works together so well… then this is a book you’ll want to pick up, soon.

I own a Kindle edition of this title.
